  • Studied chemistry at Lausanne University.
  • PhD in Sciences (Phytochemistry) at Lausanne University.
  • Post-doctoral studies in toxicology in Stockholm, Sweden, and Bristol, UK.
  • Programme of fundamental research and new analytical techniques supported by the Swiss National Foundation for Scientific Research (SNF).

Within the framework of the University Institute of Legal Medicine in Lausanne, Laurent Rivier was first founder and then, for almost twenty years, director of:

  • The analytical toxicology laboratory and
  • The Swiss laboratory for the analysis of doping (screening of control specimens)

He also holds the following posts:

  • Privat-docent and professor II at the University of Lausanne and Tromsø, Norway.
  • Judge in the Swiss disciplinary court dealing with doping.
  • Expert in accreditation of ISO 17025 (General Requirements for the Competence of Calibration and Testing Laboratories).
  • President of the Foundation Sport, Science and Society (FS3).
  • Member of the Swiss chamber of technical and scientific legal experts.
